"It’s no secret that we are big fans of journaling. Those of you who are coming to the bhuti Design Your Life talk on the 7th December will hear how we, who have been writing in our journals for years, talk passionately about the benefits of writing down your thoughts and downloading your brain.

As you start to take full ownership of your life and start designing it the way you want to live it, journaling is the first commitment you need to make to yourself. Your journal will be the best support and a trusted friend. Writing will open your eyes to what is really going on in your life; it will help you to reflect and gain valuable insights. It will help you to create a plan for change.


How to journal  
Journaling is the first lesson in the Good Life Designed online programme but, we wanted to share some tips to get you started:

1)  Find a journal you like. You will have it in your hands every day.

2)  To get things underway, start with writing three pages every day for at least two weeks. For the first few days your writing will typically be telling you what you did yesterday. Gradually you will begin to dig to a deeper layer and reflect more consciously.

3)  Write in the morning. This is when you are clearest. Make it a routine.

4)  Write freely, without self-censorship. What are you thinking, what is going on in your life now?

5)  See the diary as a good friend with whom you need to be completely honest. After a while you will begin to see a pattern in what you write. You will notice problems and challenges, and will be able to see where things fit or don’t. It will help you loosen up on things that are blocking you.

Keeping a journal can be just as hard as committing to start running, eating healthier and other new habits. Don’t make it too big and demanding before you even have put the pen to the paper.

This is something several life designers have touched when we talk to them. One of them is Amy Rouas, 40+, married, mother, Head of Industry Sales at Google.

“Keeping a journal really centers me. Again, it can be hard to keep up, if you are making the commitment too big. I just write a little every day. Sometimes it’s even less than five minutes. A little goes a long way.”

6 reasons why you should make pilates your go-to class this week

Strong core? Realignment? We've heard the rumours about Pilates but now it's time to feel the impact. As we welcome our new pilates teacher Ben to bhuti, we ask him for his top tips as to why we should all be adding it to our weekly workouts...


  1. Pilates is a full-body exercise. It focuses on the core while training the entire body as an integrated system. The workouts include ones that improve strength and balanced muscle development, flexibility and increased range of motion. It's the total body workout your body has been calling for.
  2. It lengthens the spine and improves posture. Poor posture creates a string of structural changes throughout the body that can cause pain and imbalance in the shoulders, neck and head as well as a tilt of the pelvis or a shift of the hips. it happens in our daily life but Pilates has wonderful helps to reverse this effect. 
  3. Pilates heals and prevents back injuries. Lasting improvements come with regular exercises that stretch and lengthen the spine, loosen up tight hip muscles and strengthen the abdominals. We're all in need of being a little more free! 
  4. Muscular balance. Pilates works to restore the balance and realign the body.
  5. Core strength. If the trunk of a tree is not strong, what use are its limbs? Train your centre while stretching and strengthening other muscles. You've probably heard the term functional fitness; this is it.
  6. Breathe efficiently. Pilates will increase your lung capacity and your ribs will move more freely.

Over exposed? Reduce your radiation exposure in everyday life

From headphones to mobiles and Bluetooth to Wi-Fi, we are inevitably exposed to radiation every single day. While we may not be able to eliminate exposure completely, wellness expert Lou Tassell shares her top tips on limiting exposure for you and your family... 

"I am sharing this insight with you, firstly as a parent of an 12 year old who is part of the tech generation and secondly as a wellness practitioner, who sees imbalances in the body most days of the week when treating clients. There are many research papers out there that discuss the negative impact of radiation from mobile devices, computers and Wi-Fi on our health, and there are those that will argue it is not a serious problem.

"The reality is that our body was not built to be exposed to these signals. The additional energy burden creates extra stress on the body that disrupts and creates imbalances in the body. Some are more sensitive to others, particularly children, who absorb it much more than adults, which is why parents and pregnant ladies need to know about these risks.

"I see this energy as an invisible toxin. Devices are constantly switched on in many places - in your home, office, car, shops and schools. Every time you use a device, or have one near you, you are being exposed to the signals. The bad news is that we can’t eliminate our exposure, or our children’s, however the good news is that my suggestions below can help reduce the exposure for you and your family:
  • Limit unnecessary usage of wireless devices/PC signals (including Bluetooth,  Wi-Fi)
  • Turn off the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and devices when you are not using them, especially overnight
  • Sit at a table when using a device, avoid having them on your lap
  • Never have devices near you or charging when you are sleeping - and never under your pillow
  • Do not carry devices in pockets, keep devices away from the body
  • Use air tube headphones (standard headphones have metal in so take radiation from your phone to your brain)
  • Consider other anti-radiation devices such as phone cases, tablet barriers which can reduce levels of exposure. I currently use Vest (who are US based, and have great information on their website) and
  • Do not hold the mobile phone close to your head, use the speaker instead
  • Do not place your ear to the phone when the phone is connecting
  • Avoid using your phone in low signal areas
  • Buy devices to test the levels in your home and electrical equipment
"Creating new habits through these small changes will help to limit your daily exposure to radiation. Why not give them a go?"

Yoga: It's mental

I think most of us have personally or know someone who has battled with some form of mental health condition. Its endemic in Western society; apparently Denmark, one of the most developed and supposedly ‘happiest’ nations in the world, has the highest use of antidepressants.


Through my own experience of attempted suicide, and an eating disorder (not something I have ever shared), and coming from a family of alcoholics and drug addicts, is that most of us tread the tightrope of life with the constant possibility that one day we may topple and it doesn’t take much to slip. Stress, overwork, increased use of social media and comparing ourselves to others, living in cities and becoming disconnected from one another and nature and so on and so on. The list is endless, modern life manifests causing discontent and ultimately mental illness in us as individuals. Obviously there are varying forms of mental illness but it can strike us all at anytime.  My experience of a close friend; a strong, intelligent, outgoing young man, sectioned from a sudden traumatic episode, revealed how sudden and how extreme can be this fall from supposed ‘normality’. Also how ill-equipped the in-patient mental health departments in the NHS are, and how we should so make our mental health a priority (before how we look) to avoid such an experience.

Yoga shifted my outlook, mindset and has transformed my experience of life. And this is the thing; the problems and struggles which we encounter and which can all affect our mental health for the worse will remain – it is life. But if we can shift our perspective, we can really alter how we see the world and how we experience life.


I grew up a highly sensitive and shy child, always feeling different and inferior to everyone else. Through age, experience, but a gradual shift in awareness largely due to the spiritual journey that yoga takes you on, I have managed to create more confidence, acceptance and harmony.

This self-created suffering has been my gift, has been that which has spurred to study, myself, yoga, and more importantly to teach and help others.  I still get low, and sink into despair but it is short lived and through the physical, energetic and philosophical practices of yoga I change.

Yoga for mental health
  1. The asanas (postures) help move the body which is proven to help increase feel good hormones (dopamine, endorphins, serotonin, and oxytocin) and release tension
  2. Breath work (pranayama), relaxation and meditation are practices found in most yoga classes and activate the parasympathetic nervous system which reduces stress hormones (cortisol), improves sleep and consequently improves mental health
  3. The philosophical route of yoga reminds us that we are part of something bigger than ourselves, universal energy/consciousness, which can help in reducing some of our fear and resistance to our life circumstances
  4. As we are all energy, how we are thinking or feeling creates our experience. If we can just work on improving our energy, through practices like yoga or whatever lights our fire; dancing, being in nature, singing, artwork etc., we can feel good and we become powerful energetic magnets for more positive energy in our lives
  5. Going through this journey, the ultimate path of yoga is to recognise that we are One, with the Universal Energy, or the Divine.  As the late great Wayne Dyer said, “we are spiritual beings having a human experience.” If we can recognise this, we realise we are not our thoughts, or pain.  The real ‘us' is something bigger, and infinite than that.  We can let go of limiting beliefs, fear and doubt and move towards a life of purpose, freedom, and joy

Ready to design your best Life? We talk to Pernille Spiers-Lopez, the woman who knows how...

It’s becoming quite the trend to take back the ownership of our lives. We don’t want to be controlled by bad or old habits or a job situation that doesn’t suit us anymore. We don’t want to feel trapped by expectations that don’t align with our own dreams and passions. The concept of “Designing Your Life” is becoming a “thing” and more and more people are intrigued and feel empowered by the idea of becoming life designers.

At the forefront of this movement is Pernille Spiers-Lopez, author of the book Design your Life, founder of Good Life Designed, business woman and former president of IKEA America.

She is walking the talk and living by the mantra:

After 30 years in the corporate world, Pernille started consciously designing her life. By writing her own story and publishing “Design Your Life” she gained new insight and clarity about herself and motivation to make some big changes. After 21 years at IKEA she left with no plan B.

She discovered like herself – most people have a vision for the perfect kitchen, but no vision for their life – and that very few people have access to the wealth of tools she had been privileged to at IKEA. The support system and tools had helped her navigate her life, develop her leadership, connect with her core values and now writing her next chapter with intent.  By sharing a simple process and the necessary tools, no-one has to wait to turn 53 to know their values, know who they are, create a personal vision and design their best life.

Meet Yogayda: Healer to the stars + holder of bhuti hearts

Described by Kate Winslet as ‘the teacher who got under her skin’, inspirational international teacher and healer Ayda Koc is returning to bhuti for a whole weekend.

As she says "YOGAYDA is about connection, with yourself, with others and to the heart. It’s about connecting with both your light and darkness. Drawing on my personal experiences with pain and desire to help clients reach their full potential in life, my Yogayda therapy, naturopathic abilities and shamanic healing style is always inspirational and intuitive."

Bringing light, love + laughter to all who meet her, we caught up with Ayda to find out where it all began + what we can expect at each of her workshops...


bhuti are forever inspired by your energy and aura but for those who haven’t met you yet, who is Ayda?

Born half-Turkish and half Italian, I have a La Dolce-Vita spirit, often loud, emotional but always colourful! I like to create a trustworthy, yet professional space where we can turn detailed sharings and serious subjects into excitement, simple understanding and joy. I like to be cheeky and no matter what celebrity, superstar or VIP I work with, I will always be playful, cheeky and authentic. My favourite slogan is ‘Just do it!’ and ‘Keep it simple.’

So tell us, how did your journey begin?

I had a conversation with a doctor after I had gone down to nine-percent body fat, which is quite dangerous for a woman. He was concerned for me – mostly mentally, as I didn’t have anorexia or anything like that, I was just addicted to sports. I think I was compensating for my sadness of not being able to dance ballet anymore. I had started jogging again and my Asthma became worse, I was having dizzy, fainting spells… I realised that I may never be able to do the sport I loved again and so signed up to a professional yoga studio.

And then you started teaching?

I had started practicing yoga daily although my journey into teaching began while I was in India. I didn’t practice yoga but did some charity work in a small village. It was here that a fifth generation Brahmin who owned a Tantric ashram came to me and said “I hear a lot about you and what you are doing for this village. I would like to invite you for dinner in my ashram.”

I felt a bit intimidated and declined the invite. Of course, the Brahmin thought I was quite rude and sent someone over to remind me of his invitation. She very kindly said to me that if someone like him invites you to dinner, you shouldn’t say no. So in the end I went, and he told me straight away that he wanted to train me to be a teacher, and asked if I wanted to ‘save’ people. I burst into tears – I didn’t know what he was seeing in me but it resonated. I was always having people end up on my sofa telling me their life stories or helping people after yoga classes. So it was here, really, that the true connection to yoga, Tantra and me started. I stayed in India to train with him for five years (off and on), and after that I did two more yoga teacher training courses including Anusara yoga.

Inspired by your beautiful story, we can’t wait for for your Yogayda weekend. Can you tell us a little about the Yogayda method?

The Yogayda method is Anusara based. Once you’ve tried this, you are hooked – the alignments and adjustments are so profound and the healing benefits are amazing. I also use my Shamanic drum and other instruments. I use sage and work with the moon constellations, plus I incorporate Tantric flow.


For those intrigued but are still yet to try, what is tantric dance?

Tantric Dance is about letting go of your mask(s). It helps you to stop feeling pressures or to be the perfect employee, co-worker, wife, husband, parent, daughter or son. It's about letting go, being free and even wild. Nothing should stop you from feeling yourself again! Tantric is there to unlock your fullest potential – be it physically, emotionally, spiritually, professionally.

Why would people benefit from taking part in tantric dance?

The benefits are simple. Unleash rules, burdens, heaviness, sadness, numbness, thoughts, anxiety and stress from your system. You need never to have danced before, no skill or level of dance is required!

Do you have any daily rituals to help you to stay mindful + connected to yourself?

I’ve maintained a personal practice over the years but it’s much more gentle now. I do a lot of Tantric breathing exercises, Kundalini and more yin yoga, which is female energy. I can practice for five minutes, half an hour or sometimes one and a half hours but I have let go of the pressure of putting my practice into my calendar as something I ‘have’ to do in order to be a good teacher. I believe you have to find a practice option you can live with; what your body tells you, not what any teacher tells you. For me, this includes meditating twice a day, setting conscious intentions and practicing awareness exercises and praying. It doesn’t have to be physical.

Is Tarot the self-help tool you've been looking for? Tero Hynynen thinks so...

“When thinking of self-help tools, we tend to think of meditation, mindfulness, yoga, visualisation or CBT. Tarot cards most likely wouldn't pop up in most people's list and yet, this is the direction where Tarot seems to be going.

We’ve all come across 'old skool' fortune-tellers using Tarot cards to continue the long tradition of readings focused on the future however, more people are looking for something else; not just wanting to hear what will happen to them, regardless of their actions, but instead how they can live a more meaningful life. "Why is my situation like it is, is there something I can do about it?", "What do I need to understand in my situation, what is the deeper meaning behind this?", or "Why is this pattern repeating itself in my life?"


Tarot is a wonderful tool to assist us in times of change and as it is, change is the only constant. If you ask me, the real power and gift of Tarot lies in its transformative powers, not in its ability to reveal the future. The Tarot can do that, and in my experience it does it rather well - but it's sort of missing the point. What is really important is the Now, the present moment - not the future. If I change something here and now, it will automatically affect my future.

The 'Psychological Tarot' is based on archetypes. Archetypes could be seen as powerful, basic forces of life operating within our psyche - most often unconsciously. The Tarot cards could be seen as mirroring or depicting these same forces. The basic idea is to become aware of these powerful forces shaping ourselves and our lives. Whatever remains in our unconscious, remains out of our reach. If we want to do something about these forces, we first need to become aware of them. Tarot is one tool we can use to achieve this.


Unfortunately, Tarot gets quite a bit of bad press in the media - whenever the cards are shown in a movie, there's always the Death card, or the Devil card, reinforcing the scary stigma of Tarot. A shame, really. Tarot cards can't hurt you in any way, they're just thick paper with images glued on them. What can go wrong in a reading, is a bad reader who doesn't do their job right. Therefore it's best to choose a reader who has a good reputation. Also, it doesn't hurt to ask from the reader before the session, "How do you use the cards, what is this about?". That will give you some idea of how the reader is approaching the session.

Tarot is best known for fortune-telling, but its real potential lies elsewhere. The cards offer us a map into the unconscious, a window to our soul. Tarot Reading can give you a better picture of where you are in your life, and provide tools for personal growth, problem-solving, and spiritual quest. Whatever your question is, these mediaeval "wisdom images" will offer you insight and intuition.”

Where does Tarot come from?

  • First emerging in Renaissance Italy, Tarot cards were used by the powerful ruling families of the Northern city-states, including the Visconti, Sforza and d'Este families, who commissioned famous artists to paint cards with real gold and silver paints
  • With the development of the paper industry, Tarot cards became more popular and found their way into other social classes. From its birth in the mid-15th Century the cards were used to play games, but other uses probably coexisted too (mnemonic techniques and philosophical systems rooted in Renaissance humanism)
  • In 18th Century France, Tarot cards became part of the Enlightenment, and were being used for fortune-telling. The perilous days of 1789 leading up to the French Revolution brought insecurity to everyone's doorstep and the time was ripe for Tarot to become a magical tool revealing what the future held
  • In the 20th Century Tarot decks became more and more popular, and towards the end of the Century the 'Tarot Industry' became a reality.
  • Nowadays hundreds if not thousands of different decks are available, featuring any genre or style one can think of. There's a Tarot deck based on Druids, zombies, angels, baseball, Lord of the Rings, cats, dogs, alcohol, vampires, crystals, Native Americans, New York, London, mathematics, Cabala, housewives, Sherlock Holmes, flowers - think of any subject or topic, and there's a good chance a deck based on that is already out there

Tero Hynynen ( has been reading and studying the Tarot since 1990, and has been teaching since 2003. Tero combines ideas and techniques from Franklian Logotherapy, Steinerian Art Therapy, and Jungian Psychology into his practice and has an RN BScN with a background in neurosurgery ICU for 12 years. Tero has co-directed and co-produced a 2-disc Teach Yourself DVD on Tarot in Finland in 2012, and co-created the Full Life Tarot deck, based on photographs, in 2015. Tero holds a degree of Academic Associate in Logotherapy with Specialisation in Art Therapy, granted by the Viktor Frankl Institute. Tero is also a Tai Chi and Qigong Instructor and has a Diploma in Complementary Medicine with Specialisation in Phytotherapy.

Spotlight! Meet Jason Moore: the man behind Richmond's modern mindfulness.

As the season changes, summer holidays are over and children head back to school, we start to neglect our own selves once again. This September, we’ll be joined by mindfulness expert Jason Moore who’ll be holding workshops for children and adults to help us reconnect and learn to trust our choices. Here's your chance to find out a little more...

bhuti has been really excited to have you join us but for those still to discover your incredible sessions, who is Jason Moore?

I believe in a life where communication is the key to understanding the world and those around us so that we can learn and grow from each other. This starts with communicating with ourselves, listening to ourselves and trusting our inner guides of spirit and intuition. At 19, I was performing in the west end, traveling the world performing and eventually becoming a theatre director incorporating my own beliefs’ self belief and self doubt. My own spiritual journey has taken me to many paths and this has taught me to understand that we can all teach one another. I have since started teaching mindfulness in schools and creating programs for schools and children’s clubs. I’ve also led talks, workshops and meditations to adults to guide them into trusting themselves again.

You made mindfulness a priority after discovering the benefits through your career in the theatre. How did this support your personal life as well as your career?

We’re always learning and I was able to reconnect to myself through meditation and other spiritual forms as a way of understanding the choices I could make in life. It was so powerful just trusting and knowing, which is something we all have and can do.

We always hear the wonderful effects of practicing mindfulness for adults yet it can be hugely important and beneficial for children as well. Can you tell us more about this?

One of the biggest benefits of teaching mindfulness at a young age, is instilling the idea that children are in charge of their own thoughts and feelings.

You've worked very closely with schools, teachers and parents. What differences have been noticed in the children's - and teacher's - learning and mindset?

Parents and children have often told me that a guided meditation in school helps to overcome the anxieties and the frustrations that often come with doing homework. Whether they are struggling because the work is difficult or because they are distracted and want to go outside and play, mindfulness helps children to be conscious of these feelings and handle them in a healthy and fulfilling way. The children I teach will often ask their parents to start taking up mindfulness at home, so they can continue to practise outside of school.

Earlier this yeat at the schools where I teach, I led short mindfulness sessions before the children started their SATs exam each morning. By connecting with the present moment and letting go of their fears and anxieties, they were able to focus on the exam and visualise themselves doing a good job.

The playground can also be a difficult and unpredictable environment for children. Mindfulness can help children process their feelings after playtime. One child actually said to me after they had a disagreement in the playground: 'I was worrying about what had happened, but now I can let it go and get on with my day’.

Your classes will be held over 5 weeks once school returns but what do the children's sessions include?

A lot of fun! I incorporate music, games, drama and meditation as these all help young people to open up their creative mind and continue their self development.

We're thrilled that you'll also be hosting adult sessions, what should the grown ups expect?

For the adults, the weekly classes are created to help them to reconnect with intuition and learn to trust their inner selves. Whether it’s at work, home, or in life experiences, these courses will give them guidance in making free choices on the questions we get stuck on in our lives. We will have a subject each week and discuss the beliefs around this subject such as self belief, fear, activating creativity, saying yes and saying no. People will also gain tools such as creative visualisations and meditations.

In 2017 you've already worked in Norway, Bejing, the UK and written for national newspapers and media outlets. What does the rest of 2017 look like for you?

I'm currently leading a workshop on mindfulness for the Global Social Leader conference with international students. I’ll soon be back theatre directing in Norway and then with my mindfulness clubs still in Kew. I’ll also be at bhuti this Autumn and have begun writing a book on mindfulness.
